Google Ads Account vs. Manager (MCC) Account: What's the Difference?
If you run ads for more than one business - or plan to - it pays to understand the difference between a standard Google Ads account and a Manager account (still widely called an MCC, short for My Client Center). Choosing the right structure up front saves a lot of headaches later. (Note: "Google AdWords" was renamed "Google Ads" in 2018; you may still see the old name floating around.)
Standard Google Ads Account
A standard account is the default when you sign up. It is designed to run advertising for a single business. Historically, a single Google login was tied to one ad account, which made managing several accounts from one place awkward.
Moving an existing account under a Manager: If you already have a standard account and want Manager features, the clean path is to create a Manager account with a separate Google login, then send a link request from the Manager to your existing account and accept it. Your original account keeps its history and just becomes a linked client of the Manager.
Manager (MCC) Account
A Manager account is built to oversee many Google Ads accounts from one dashboard. It is the right choice for agencies, consultants, and anyone running ads for multiple businesses or locations.
Key Manager Account Features
- View performance for all linked accounts on a single dashboard.
- Track performance and manage budgets across multiple accounts.
- Cross-account reporting and consolidated or separate billing per client.
- Sub-managers (sub-MCCs) for organizational hierarchy.
- Automated rules, custom alerts, and email notifications across accounts.
- Easy, secure access management for team members and clients.
Which Should You Choose?
If you only ever run one account and never expect to add another, a standard account is fine. But most growing businesses and anyone managing ads for others should start with a Manager account - it avoids the cleanup work later and makes adding accounts painless.
